Dozens of prison guards Paremoremo called in sick on Sunday following another attack on a guard by an inmate.

In what a Corrections official has called a wave of "organised violence", it's the fifth attack on a guard in just two weeks.

Whilst staff union the Corrections Association wasn't involved in the mass sickie, it did threaten to leave maximum security prisoners locked up on Saturday morning if the prison didn't ensure their safety.

Corrections Association president Alan Whitley told Stuff that the most recent attack on Saturday happened while the prisoner was being moved.

"They were basically moving the prisoner and he lashed out without any warning and punched a staff member," he said.

The corrections officer had to be taken to hospital and now is recovering at home.

There was also another attack on Friday last week where a prisoner's face was badly beaten.
