A woman has been left terrified after being chased by an enraged driver who at one point hit speeds of up to 50km/h while in reverse.

The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, said the incident began around 11am on Thursday on Columba Ave in the Calton Hill area of Dunedin, NZME reports.

The driver reversed down the street in an apparent backwards pursuit before spinning his car around and continuing to follow the car along the Southern Motorway, headed north.

According to the victim the man appeared "high as a kite" as he chased her and repeatedly punched the woman's car when they came to a stop at Lookout Pt.

She said he also yelled at her out of the window of his car and waved a tyre lever around.

He drove off after she told him she was calling the police, and was nowhere to be found by the time they arrived.
