Rotorua's created a 'safe zone' to help parents and kids alike learn more about Māori culture.

The city's opening its first dedicated bilingual playground on Friday. The Government Gardens site underwent a $20,000 makeover in May to make it into a Māori language zone.

Mayor Steve Chadwick says it's more than just a play area.

"[The children] learn a little bit and I think that exposure makes it very, very special," she said.

But she says it's not just for kids.

"People who aren't comfortable with even listening to and let alone understanding the language can go in there with children," she said.
