Saturday sport is back on for Christchurch kids after wet weather water-logged grounds beyond play.

For the last two weekends, only limited play has been allowed on the council's sports fields because fields were too water-logged.

However this week's dry weather combined with the council's management of the grounds means the fields are ready for a full day of Saturday sport.

Council's head of parks Andrew Rutledge says it is "great news".

"The wet start to the season has been very challenging but our staff and the sports codes have worked closely together to ensure everyone gets an opportunity to play this weekend."

"The sports codes have been brilliant in managing their draws and games schedules so we can get maximum play on the fields.

"It is going to be great to see all the fields in action this weekend and kids back out enjoying their sport," Mr Rutledge says.

The South Island is in for cold weekend as winter well and truly sets in. Freezing temperatures hit many South Island towns overnight Thursday.

And more is forecast for the weekend with parts of the south languishing in the single digits, while others will only make the low teens.
