A second man has been charged in relation to a stabbing at a Grey Lynn dairy that sent two people to hospital with serious and critical injuries.

A man armed with a knife entered the Hylite Dairy on Great North Road just after 7pm on June 19. He waited for customers to leave before jumping over the counter and stabbing a 36-year-old man.

He also stabbed the man's 62-year-old mother in the stomach when she tried to intervene.

The assailant then fled the scene without taking anything from the shop. A local retailer who witnessed the scene told Newshub they saw a man "casually" leave the store holding a knife covered in blood.

On June 22, police charged a 16-year-old male with assault with intent to rob and aggravated wounding. They said at the time they were looking for a second man seen outside the dairy at the time of the stabbing.

On Tuesday detective senior sergeant Lloyd Schmid said police had charged a 27-year-old Otahuhu man with assault with intent to rob and aggravated wounding.

He said he hoped the Grey Lynn community would feel safer now that the offenders had been apprehended.

"This has been a traumatic ordeal for the victims and there has been a tremendous amount of support offered by the community which has been greatly appreciated," he said.

"This was very distressing for the family who suddenly found their mother and son seriously injured and police would like to thank the community for the support they have offered."

A week on from the attack, the woman is now recovering with her family at home. Her son, whose lung and small intestine were ruptured when he was stabbed, is still in hospital and reportedly doing well. He may have to remain in hospital for up to a month.

The 27-year-old man will appear in the Auckland District Court on Tuesday.
