The South Island has woken to icy roads and sub-zero temperatures after a cold night.
Both Dunedin and Canterbury police have issued warnings about the roads, saying the conditions are dangerous for drivers.
"Dunedin may be known for its warm hospitality, but it's a chilly greeting received by motorists in the city today," a spokesperson said.
Residents have been warned to be careful in the hill suburbs and in the city. Police are warning to be especially careful due to a number of out of town guests in the city for the rugby on Saturday night.
Canterbury police have posted photos of the frost-covered roads on Instagram and warned drivers around the garden city to be careful.
"[Negative 3degC] in the Garden City this morning brings a beauty of a sunrise," they wrote.
"Drive to the conditions and watch out for ice."
