Police are warning the public about a suspicious man approaching young girls in Christchurch.

Two incidents have been reported over the past week, both involving a man in a black sedan. The vehicle is a four-door, possibly with a sliding door, with rust at the rear.

The first incident took place at 8:25am on Monday 25 June in Tosswill Rd, Prebbleton.

The second occurred at 5:40pm on Wednesday 27 June in Greenhurst St, Sockburn.

Police are asking to hear from anyone who was in these areas at those times and may have information that could help them identify the driver. If that's you, please call Detective Sergeant Brad Grainger on 03 363 7400.

Police are telling the public to remain alert, but not alarmed.

"Incidents like this are a timely reminder for families to have discussions around behaviours and actions that are inappropriate or that make a child feel uncomfortable, rather than concentrating on the types of people that could harm them.

"We actively encourage people to tell children and young adults to report anything that makes them feel unsafe or uncomfortable."

This can be a trusted adult, a teacher or the police.

Anyone who has an immediate concern for their safety should call 111 immediately.
