Teenage boy dies in hospital after ute flipped on Auckland beach

A teenage boy left in a critical condition after a ute he was riding in flipped on a north Auckland beach has died.

Robbie Cederwall, was a 17-year-old student leader at Rangitoto College and Salvation Army volunteer.

"Robbie was known for his infectious smile, cheeky wit and caring personality," his father said in a statement.

"He had a magical way of brightening up your day and always making you feel special and important to him."

A friend of Robbie's told Newshub he was a well-liked student and his friends have been visiting the site of the accident.

He said a lot of people have been affected by Robbie's passing.

Six other passengers were taken to North Shore Hospital with moderate to minor injuries after the vehicle flipped on Sunday.  Some had been perched on the back of the ute. Others were inside the ute's cab.

The 18-year-old driver of the ute fled the Rothesay Bay scene on foot before returning, according to police.

"This group has made some bad decisions which have been irresponsible and reckless, and as result seven people have been injured - one very seriously," Waitematā East Area Commander Inspector Sundip Patel said.

"I cannot emphasise enough the need to not take risks with lives when driving and ensure others are not put in danger."

Insp Patel said alcohol was a factor in the accident.

Police told Newshub they have yet to make a decision on a charge, but an investigation is being conducted.
