The Tramways Union has complained after poor training of new Wellington school bus drivers led to one allegedly paying a student $5 for directions.

Tranzit took over most of the Hutt Valley bus routes earlier in June, including the school buses. It's been a rough start with many of them being late, lost or missing, Stuff reports.

An anonymous teacher from Wainuiomata School complained it's leading to students being late to class and some unorthodox solutions are being used.

"The buses simply weren't on time... one student was paid $5 to tell the driver where to go," he told Stuff.

Tramways Union secretary Kevin O'Sullivan criticised the situation and said it would never have happened if previous contract holder NZ Bus had been retained.

"It is pretty much what we thought would happen," he said.

He didn't have any criticisms for the driver who paid the student though, blaming the situation on poor training from Tranzit.

Tranzit transport and operations director Keven Snelgrove said the drivers had been given between two and six weeks' training depending on their experience.

The delays are primarily down to new routes and will clear up as time goes on, a spokesperson told Stuff.

"New routes, new drivers, new situation," they said.
