A brand new $30 million hotel in Kaikōura is the biggest development the township has seen in close to 100 years, the mayor says.

Sudima Hotels has been given the green light to build the four-and-a-half star, 118-room hotel on the township's shoreline.

Kaikōura Mayor Winston Gray says the hotel will be a great development for the township.

"It's fantastic news... it's really a game changer for this town," he explained.

"This is the biggest thing in this town for probably a 100 years to be honest, it really is."

He says it will put focus back on the town as a tourist destination.

A magnitude-7.8 earthquake devastated Kaikōura when it struck on November 14, 2016. A number of accommodations were closed for months after the tremors.

By the time the doors open, up to 70 people will have jobs - and all going to plan, the hotel is expected to open by 2020.
