Weather: Winter chaos as below freezing temperatures hit New Zealand

Temperatures have plummeted around New Zealand as winter sinks its claws into the country. Parts of Auckland fell below freezing early Wednesday morning, with Ardmore dropping to -0.9degC.

Windowscreens around the region have been frozen over, while residents have been urged to dress to the conditions.

"The satellite images this morning show plenty of clear sky across New Zealand," MetService says.

"Under those clear skies the temperature quickly dropped away last night with many places recording minimum temperatures close to, or even just below freezing."

St Arnaud in Nelson Lakes fell down to -6degC, while Waiouru was the coldest place in the North Island with -4.5C. Hamilton overnight's minimum hit -1.7degC, and Palmerston North got as low as -0.6degC.

"Dress in layers to keep warm," NIWA urges. "Warm up with a tea or coffee in the morning!"

The cold weather is causing chaos on the roads.

Police are warning motorists across Taranaki to be extremely cautious on the roads following a number of a crashes caused by ice on the road. There have been four car crashes in the area since 5am due to the conditions.

"Any patches of road which appear wet will likely be ice and should be treated as such," a police spokesperson says.

"Police are also advising people to check their vehicles and tyres are roadworthy and ensure all windows are completely clear of ice before getting behind the wheel."
