Immigration NZ has apologised after deporting the alleged victim of a serious crime after she reported it.

The woman's name and the nature of the allegations haven't been revealed, but she spent three nights in a cell before being deported, NZME reports.

Immigration Minister Iain Lees-Galloway said she had been treated appallingly.

"This incident fell well short of the expectations I have, and I've been informed by Immigration NZ that they are taking action to ensure that this doesn't happen again."

The department told NZME new procedures have since been put in place to prevent it happening again, including having a supervisor review detainees' cases before they're put on a plane.

"In the vast majority of cases our staff make the right decisions but in this case we accept that we got it wrong," assistant general manager Pete Devoy said.

The woman is now back in New Zealand, and has reportedly been granted a six-month visitor visa.
