World champs in Manurewa dancers' sights after Will Smith endorsement

The Manurewa High School students whose '90s-inspired dance went viral have received a shout-out from the Fresh Prince himself.

American actor Will Smith shared a video of the Rewa All Stars' second place-winning routine to his 77 million social media followers with the caption 'New Zealand turnin' up... this piece is HOT!'

The official celebrity endorsement sky-rocketed the video's views to more than 2 million in just a matter of hours.

"It's just really encouraging for us as south-side students to have this recognition from someone really famous in the world," says student Sage Minaripa.

Their four-minute performance at a national hip-hop dance competition was a nod to the beloved 1990s sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

Lead dancer Iavana Seuala, 17, says Smith's character is one of his idols.

"Will Smith is one of my biggest inspirations, just as an actor, performer and the way he dresses back in the 1990s, back in the Fresh Prince days."

The viral video is just the beginning: the team have worlds in the United States in their sights.

"It's definitely not cheap, we reckon we're looking at about $200,000," says principal Pete Jones.

"The kids are determined to make it. They've seen what they can achieve."
