Auckland drivers paid $32.5m in fines in the last financial year, the largest amount in at least eight years.

Figures obtained by RNZ show $15.5 million of the total figure came from traffic infringements, including Warrant of Fitness and vehicle registration issues.

Parking infringements generated $8.8 million, and there was $6.8 million in special vehicle lane infringements.

An additional $1 million came from towage infringements.

The number of parking metres in the city is at the lowest point in seven years at 798 metres in Auckland central and its surrounding suburbs, down from 933 in 2013.
