An Auckland police officer has been taken off frontline duties after reportedly illegally tasering a woman.

The 24-year-old officer was on duty in Auckland's CBD at the time of the alleged incident in September last year, Auckland City District Commander Superintendent Karyn Malthus says.

The weapon used in the incident was a taser, NZME reports.

The officer is facing a charge of assault with a weapon and presenting a restricted weapon.

An internal investigation will be conducted pending the outcome of the case in court, police say.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority is also carrying out its own investigation.
