A bus driver allegedly rammed a driver on purpose in the Wellington CBD last week.

Leo Russo claims while he was driving on Willis St on Thursday evening, a bus slammed into the back of his car.

He believes the bus driver did it on purpose, to get back at him after he accidentally drove in the Manners St bus lane.

Mr Russo told Stuff after he pulled over to swap details with the bus driver, he was subject to "an extremely aggressive tyrant of abuse".

He suffered minor damage to his car in the incident, and he has voiced concerns about the driver who he believes poses a danger to other drivers and pedestrians.

Police are investigating the incident and will speak to the bus driver and company.

NZ Bus chief executive Zane Fulljames told Stuff the operator is investigating, and NZ Bus "do not condone the actions as alleged and would follow our standard disciplinary procedures to address if the allegations are proven factual,  after a fair and objective investigation".

Drivers who are caught driving in a bus lane illegally can face an instant fine of $150.
