Children's Commissioner 'perplexed' by death of 2yo

The death of a two-year-old in the Bay of Plenty has child advocates worried.

A 32-year-old man is facing murder charges after the child's body was found in the Rangitaiki River in Whakatane on Sunday.

Children's Commissioner Judge Andrew Becroft says he always has questions when a child is found dead.

"Whenever a child dies we're always perplexed, we always want answers, we always are challenged and we rightly ask ourselves can we do more," he said.

Judge Becroft said if parents are feeling overwhelmed by the pressures of parenting there are places they can reach out to.

"If anyone is feeling under pressure and finding the challenge of nurturing and loving children too much then there are very good organisations available in every community."
