A Canterbury police officer has resigned after allegedly sending inappropriate text messages to a vulnerable woman who sought police help.

In May it was reported the officer was working at the front counter of a Christchurch police station and sent several text messages to the woman after she visited.

An investigation into the incident has concluded, but due to privacy reasons the outcome of the investigation cannot be discussed, Canterbury District Commander Superintendent John Price says.

"This incident is a stark reminder for all police that we hold a trusted and honourable position within the community, and any lapse in the police values has consequences," Supt Price says.

"It is very much my clear expectation that the woman who approached police should have received assistance and advice that reflected our values.

"She did not, and police have apologised directly to her."

Supt Price says members of the public can be assured that when matters are brought to police attention, they will be investigated - and people will be held to account for any wrongdoing.

This case is rare, he says, and not an overall reflection of officers in the line of duty.
