Coromandel clean-up: Storm aftermath will take days to clear

Road workers and geologists are helping with the clean-up after wild weather battered the Coromandel.

State Highway 25a opened earlier on Monday - but State Highway 25 between Thames and Tapu is still closed, with a huge slip blocking the road.

A massive slip covering the coastal road has tumbled down the hillside and piled up below.

On Monday, workers and geologists were on site to begin the clean-up.

"We're looking at the current state of the damage and using a drone to get a better perspective," Senior Engineering Geologist Chris Pevreal said

They're unsurprised that such heavy rain caused the destruction.

Workers say there are about half a dozen other slips further up the Thames Coastal Rd, but this one is by far the biggest about 10,000 cubic metres.

Work is underway to open the road to one lane, but it could be a week before the huge slip is cleared and the road is fully reopened.

In the meantime, it's making life difficult for locals like Tony Raymond; he and his two daughters were cut off from their house on the other side.

"We're trying to get home actually; we were ten minutes late to this slip yesterday and we saw a big sloppy mess," Mr Raymond says.

On Monday, with the help of a New Zealand Transport Agency escort and a short walk across the beachfront at low tide, they were hoping to meet mum on the other side.

With a clear day in the Coromandel on Monday, the worst of the weather has passed - but the aftermath of the storm will take a few more days to clear.
