Get ready Invercargill for a 'purrfect' cat café experience

Invercargill cat lovers rejoice! SPCA Southland is opening a pop-up café to fulfil your feline desires.

The SPCA will open a café in Cambridge Arcade for two days to help raise funds for its annual Cupcake Day, which supports its work rescuing and caring for animals without owners.

While baristas from the Southern Institute of Technology make coffee and other students bake cupcakes for sale, patrons can relax with five friendly cats.

Bandit, Mynee, Trevor, Stallone and Geanie are the lucky felines that have been specifically chosen to take part in the fundraising effort, which marks the 10th anniversary of the organisation's Cupcake Day.

Since it was first started, nearly half a million animals have been helped from the $2.3 million raised.

SPCA hopes to raise $320,000 this year through Cupcake Day sales, with all funds directed to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome the animals.

Auckland's Cat Lounge is currently facing closure but was the first cat café to open in New Zealand, with others subsequently opening across the country.

The Invercargill café will be open on Saturday, August 4 and Monday August 6.
