A man is lucky to be alive after leaping from his exploding boat off Auckland's Herald Island last night.
Local residents who heard the explosion at around 7:30pm said it sounded like a truck hitting the house.
"We felt the whole house shake," Michael Reeves told Newshub. "Our neighbours have lost some windows from the explosion."
Mr Reeves and his dad jumped into the water to pull the men to safety. He said there was no hesitation.
"Nah… it's something you should do if you're capable. I didn't really feel the cold - my adrenaline was going."
He said the boat was now in 100 pieces.
The boatie suffered burns and is in a serious condition in Middlemore Hospital.
