A school prank has nearly ended in tragedy after a student was hit by a fleeing vehicle.

The incident took place on July 4 and involved students from Waitaki Boy's High School and St Kevins College in Otago. NZME reports they were members of the first XV rugby teams.

Initially eggs and rocks were thrown at buildings and cars, but things escalated and one student was hit by a car.

The student was not seriously injured though and police confirmed to Newshub the student left in the car that hit them.

None of the affected parties have made a formal complaint, but police are still investigating and have reviewed CCTV footage.

The school has been contacted and an investigation into who was driving the vehicle is on-going.

Sergeant Tony Woodridge told Newshub it could have been a serious incident and the students are lucky no serious consequences occurred.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Oamaru police on 03 433 1400 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
