How 'asking for Angela' could save you from unwanted sexual contact

As your getting ready for a first date, you may have everything sorted - you look great, you're feeling good, you've got your car keys, phone and wallet.

But have you got a plan in place in case you need to bail if you become extremely uncomfortable? That's where Angela could come in handy.

Ask For Angela is an initiative where people can ask for an Angela who does not exist if they start to feel uneasy about their situation.

Two years ago, posters went up in UK pubs where woman could Ask For Angela if they were feeling uneasy about their date.

It's now a global initiative, and is likely to be rolled out across New Zealand soon - a move Kiwi bar staff say is well overdue.

Fiona McNamara from the Sexual Abuse Prevention Network told Three's The Project it is about providing someone a way out if they were drinking at a bar and felt a particular sexual aggression from someone they were with.

"The idea with Ask For Angela is they can approach bar staff and ask 'Hey is Angela working tonight?' And they can go out the back and have whatever conversation they need to have in a private space."

She said if it was really serious, she hoped bar staff would ring police - but if it was a situation bar staff or security could handle, they would do so.

The solution may even be as simple as organising that person a safe ride home, Ms McNamara says.
