Man charged with murder of 69yo in Western Springs pleads insanity

A man has pleaded not guilty by way of insanity for the murder of an elderly man who was found in a stairwell in a Western Springs flat last year. 

Gabriel Hikari Yad-Elohim is on trial at the High Court in Auckland for allegedly murdering 69-year-old Michael Mulholland in a block of Housing New Zealand flats, where the victim lived, on 26 September. 

The man charged with murder has pleaded not guilty by way of insanity, his lawyer Anna Cresswell said on Monday. 

Detective Inspector Scott Beard described the incident as a "violent attack" which left the victim with fatal injuries. 

The trial adjourned after the jury was empanelled on Monday and will commence Tuesday before Justice Gerard van Bohemen.
