A man has been apprehended by police after a wild pursuit through central Christchurch.
He was spotted near where police believe a burglary had just occurred near Waltham on Tuesday.
He was signalled to stop by police, but did not. He then tried to drive at police staff who were laying road spikes on Falsgrave St, forcing them to dive out of the way.
Two tyres on the right side of the stolen vehicle were blown by the spikes.
The man drove the wrong way down Barbadoes St, after which the pursuit was temporarily abandoned by police.
As he drove through the central city, several members of the public alerted police to his whereabouts. At one point he deliberately drove at a person riding a motorbike.
Police then resumed the pursuit, which was at a very low speed because the man was driving on the vehicle's rims, having blown two tyres. He was again asked to stop but refused.
As the man drove then down Cranford St, he rear-ended a parked police car. Three other police cars then blocked him in.
Once stopped, the man was seen reaching into the rear of the vehicle to grab something. Police then smashed the vehicle's passenger window to restrain him and prevent him from obtaining any weapons.
Police Tasered the man while apprehending him, saying he was "non-compliant" and resisted throughout the entire procedure.
There were items of interest in the vehicle, but police won't know where they came from until a comprehensive search of the vehicle has been completed.
