The search for a wanted man in relationship to an Invercargill shooting has been extended nationwide.

Anthony Miles Tamaiti Watkins, 24, has a warrant for his arrest in connection to the shooting of a 52-year-old man on Kelvin St on June 30.

After the incident, cordons were put in place and the armed offenders squad (AOS) was called in.

Police conducted a scene examination and found the firearm believed to have been used.

Watkins is described as being approximately 167 cm in height and is believed to be unpredictable, Detective Chris Lucy says.

He is the only person being sought by police in relation to the shooting.

"It's important that we find Watkins," Det Lucy says.

He is thought to have connections in Invercargill, Dunedin and the Bay of Plenty.

Earlier this week, the victim was released from Southland Hospital and is recovering at home.

The man thanked emergency services and the public for their assistance at the time of the incident.

He is a completely innocent party in relation to this incident, police have explained.

Members of the public with information of Watkin's whereabouts are urged to contact Police on (03) 211 0400, or through Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
