Charges have been laid over the death of a man who was found lying badly hurt on the street in Whanganui in April.

Daniel Gooch, 56, was found unconscious on Tinirau St early on the morning of Friday, April 20. He died a few weeks later in Taranaki Hospital.

A 34-year-old man will appear in court on Tuesday charged with Mr Gooch's manslaughter. Police say he was known to Mr Gooch, but not related.

"The investigation team have collated a great deal of information with the assistance of the Whanganui community," said Det Neville Mullany.

"We would like to thank all those who helped with the investigation."

Mr Gooch underwent a number of operations to treat serious head injuries before he died, Stuff reported in May.

He was an alcoholic who had previously spent time in jail for attacks on his partner.
