Police have arrested a 32-year-old man after a violent dispute involving ex-flatmates in Christchurch.

Police were called to an address in the eastern suburb of Wainoni on Wednesday night at around 5:45pm.

"A man had reportedly threatened another man with an imitation firearm and assaulted him with it," Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Cottam says.

"A number of blank shots were fired. The man who was assaulted received minor injuries and did not require hospitalisation."

Police and the Armed Offenders Squad carried out a search warrant in New Brighton on Thursday in relation to the incident.

"A 32-year-old man has been charged with assault with a weapon and using an imitation firearm, and is due to appear in the Christchurch District Court on Friday," Det Snr Sgt Cottam says.

"Christchurch Police would like to remind people that it is an offence to threaten someone with an imitation firearm, and this type of offending is taken extremely seriously."
