Police have put out a plea out to Wellington whale watchers to be careful on the motorway and not stop their cars to observe.
In a statement on Saturday police say they understand people are keen to view the animal and don't want to get in the way of it but to please do it safely.
They say they have already had to deal with several near-misses on the motorway on Saturday.

Members of the public wanting to whale watch are urged to stop at designated parking spots to view the celebrity mammal.
The whale has caused more than a splash for Wellingtonians. Thanks to its current harbour-side home, the Matariki fireworks, due to be on Saturday night, were postponed to next Saturday.
