A floating hotel proposed for Oamaru would be the first of its kind in New Zealand, if approved.

The Oamaru Licensing Trust and an unnamed developer plan to build a three-storey four and half star hotel with a rooftop area on the town's harbour.

If approved it would be the first of its kind in New Zealand, trust general manager Cathy Maaka says.

"It's unique to New Zealand, this would be the first. It's an experience - when people book accommodation they want something a bit unique."

It would also provide the town with a tourism opportunity.

The cost and timeframe of the build is still being finalised with developers but the plans were at the stage to get approval by the "relevant authorities," Ms Maaka says.
