Greenpeace executive director and former Green Party co-leader Russel Norman will have to wait a months longer to find out his fate.

He was due to be sentenced on Friday after throwing himself in front of an oil exploration vessel in 2017, but the judge in the Napier District Court reserved his decision, NZME reports.

Norman and fellow climate activist Sara Howell were protesting the presence of the Amazon Warrior, which was exploring for oil 50 nautical miles off the coast of Wairarapa, by jumping into the water.

The pair were the first to be charged under an amendment to the Crown Minerals Amendment Act made by then Energy Minister Simon Bridges, and pleaded guilty in April.

They're looking at a potential penalty of one year in jail or a fine of up to $50,000.

The pair will have to wait until September to find out.
