Hold on - severe gales are incoming for most of the country.

MetService is warning of winds up to 130km/h throughout the weekend for Wellington, Marlborough, Canterbury, Fiordland and Southland.

An active front is expected to cross the South Island on Saturday and the North Island over Saturday night, following strong rain and northwest winds.

Heavy rain that may result in rising rivers, surface flooding and slips is also possible, particularly in Fiordland, where up to 160mm of rain is expect overnight.

There is also a moderate risk of thunderstorms that could produce hail.

The public is being warned to stay away from damaged trees, power lines and unsecured structures, while driving could become hazardous.

There are also snow warnings in place for Lewis Pass, Arthur's Pass, Lindis Pass, Crown Range Rd and Milford Rd.
