A small, deep hole has appeared in the middle of an Auckland road.

Beneath the hole is an area about one metre deep and three metres wide.

The hole appeared recently in the middle of Peary Rd in Auckland's Mt Eden, and was spotted by a local who said it's a basalt cave that has collapsed.

The resident, an engineer, says if the hole was to collapse, it would definitely be big enough for the front of a car to fall into.

"There's a basalt cave system all through Auckland, and over time, this cave has collapsed thanks possibly to all the traffic going over it," the resident told Newshub.

"I'd say it's definitely big enough to take down the front of a car. It's gonna go."

Auckland Transport (AT) says contractor Downer has been on site and done a temporary repair to the road. The hole has been covered and the surrounding area bridged with two large steel plates.

Spokesperson Mark Hannan told Newshub that Peary Rd is now safe, and AT will now evaluate the problem and how to permanently repair the hole.

"We must say thanks to the local man who called this in, it meant we could get our contractors out before the hole caused any damage," says Mr Hannan.

"This area of Mt Eden is volcanic rock and this sort of thing happens occasionally."
