Students celebrate Matariki with a stellar light show

School students have joined with an award-winning light designer to create stunning light shows to celebrate Matariki.

The fourth annual Stellar festival took place at Smales Farm in Auckland and it was a treat for sore eyes.

Stunning flowers were crafted by students who are proud to see their work showcased in public.

Three North Shore schools were recruited to design, create and build their own light installations.

The theme of this year's festival was 'reflection'and the students at Carmel College want others to think about our environment.

"It was mostly just a degradation of the environment and how people don't really respect it as much as they used to and we just want to let our generation know that it's time to make a change," student Isabelle Wilson said.

Award-winning light designer Angus Muir guided students in their work and different groups from each school worked hard to be the winner.

Their teacher, Emily Donovan, was proud as punch.

"I'm extremely proud of them. There's nothing more rewarding than seeing your students first of all win a competition like this and second of all conducting themselves in such a professional manner."

Students at Takapuna Normal Intermediate School designed a piece for all ages to enjoy.

Not only did they include lights, but sound as well.

"We kind of wanted to make it as interactive as possible because from a kids perspective it's much better if you can have everyone going through it," student William Smith said.

Having the students involved in the three-day festival meant a lot to Muir.

"It adds a whole new layer to the festival and involving the community, involving the kids, giving them some experiences that they probably wouldn't have otherwise is pretty awesome."

The festival ran from Friday to Sunday.
