A post-mortem has been completed on the victim of a Christchurch hit-and-run.

Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Cottam says Steffan Pearce-Loe was walking his two dogs across Gayhurst Rd on Thursday morning when he was struck by a vehicle.

He was later found lying critically injured in the middle of Gloucester St. He passed away from his injuries on Friday night.

"Preliminary findings indicate the 30-year-old died as a result of injuries that are consistent with being struck by a motor vehicle," a police spokesperson says.

Police are analysing broken car parts left at the scene and reviewing CCTV footage. They want to speak to anyone who saw Mr Peace-Low walking two dogs in the Dallington area around midnight.

"It is possible that the driver may not have seen him and may have thought they hit a dog or another object on the road," Det Snr Sgt Cottam says. "We are urging the driver to come forward and discuss this with police.

"We are working to find answers for the victim's family, and our thoughts are with them at this tragic time."

An image of one of the car parts has been released to the public. Anyone who can identify this car part, has seen a vehicle that might be missing it or has information that can help is asked to contact Acting Detective Sergeant Ben Rolton on (03) 363 7400 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
