A Waikato mother is facing drink driving and child neglect charges after she was caught drunk behind the wheel with her kids in the car.

Waikato police say a member of the public spotted the woman's Suzuki Swift driving erratically on State Highway 3 and notified police.

Officers managed to track the woman down near Te Awamutu.

They took a breath alcohol reading and the woman blew 917mcg, nearly four times the legal limit of 250mcg.

She had apparently made her way there from Morrinsville.

A spokesperson wrote on Facebook to thank the public for their help in finding the woman and congratulate the officers for tracking her down before the situation deteriorated.

"Big thumbs up to that member of the public for following and calling us and of course well down to team blue for getting her off the road before anything worse happened."
