Wellington's holding tight to find out whether a fireworks display will go ahead on Saturday night.

There have been no sightings of the capital's resident whale in the harbour for two days.

If it's not seen on Saturday and the weather permits, fireworks will go ahead at 6:30pm.

The display is part of this year's Matariki celebrations, but it was cancelled last weekend after public concern for the whale.
