Wild weather has wreaked havoc across the lower and central North Island overnight, causing floods and power outages.

The Petone Working Men's Club flooded around 8pm on Monday evening and sustained extensive damage, Stuff reports.

A police spokesperson told Stuff they received more than 40 weather related callouts in the Wellington region on Sunday evening.

Now many North Island residents are facing a Monday morning without power.

Around 800 properties are without power and more than half are in the Taranaki region.

Paekakariki Hill Road in Wellington remains closed because of fallen trees and a slip is causing travel disruptions on State Highway 58 in Lower Hutt.

Another slip has fallen into a car in Kilbirnie.

MetService says winds of more than 110km/h could affect areas between Waitomo and Nelson on Monday.

Severe weather watches for heavy rain are in place throughout the Bay of Plenty, Gisborne and the central North Island hill country.

Strong wind watches are in place from Northland down to Wellington. It's believed the high winds may reach warning levels in some areas.

Most of the watches are expected to expire around Monday afternoon and early evening.
