Antarctica New Zealand chief executive Peter Beggs has been fired following an investigation into his conduct, the organisation's board chair has confirmed.

In a statement, Chair Sir Brian Roche says Mr Beggs was dismissed after an investigation into his conduct as the chief executive.

"Mr Beggs is leaving the organisation and will be paid his contractual entitlements only," the statement reads.

Mr Beggs' departure comes soon after another Antarctica New Zealand board member, IT entrepreneur Sharon Hunter, who also left unexpectedly, Stuff reports. Ms Hunter reportedly left to spend more time with her unwell daughter.

The government agency is charged with carrying out New Zealand's activities in Antarctica - overseeing the running of Scott Base and scientific research programmes.
