Police have closed off a Dunedin bridge after construction workers found a mortar shell.

The shell was found under the Clyde Street bridge at around midday on Wednesday.

The Leith River flows under the bridge through the University of Otago campus.

Police say the area is secure and Campus Watch are assisting them.

The bomb squad and the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) have both been notified.

The NZDF are reviewing images of the shell.

More to come.
