A child sex offender has been jailed for 17 years after a Judge rejected an assessment that stated he was at a low-risk of reoffending.

Judge Jane Farish disagreed that 41-year-old Christopher Michael Boniface was a low-risk reoffender as stated in his pre-sentence report , Court News reports.

The sentencing at the Christchurch District Court on Monday involved 33 historic charges that took place in Ashburton.

These included rape and unlawful sexual connection, involving two girls.

Boniface was found guilty by a jury during his trial but denies any wrongdoing.

He was imposed a 40 percent non-parole term and will have to serve nearly seven years before being considered for parole.

Boniface will be placed on the sex offenders list. If he is still considered a risk when he is released he will be supervised.

The minimum non-parole will help the girls move on with their lives without fear of his release, Judge Farish said.
