Christchurch City Council plans to make the city plastic straw free by the end of 2019.
City councillors want bars and restaurants to swap out plastic straw for other alternatives.
The proposal has backing from Hospitality New Zealand, which wants all its members to become plastic free by the end of this year.

Hospitality NZ spokesman Chris Casserly said the organisation was committed to promoting sustainability in the hospitality industry.
The idea was put forward by the Council's Innovation and Sustainable Development Committee in a meeting on Wednesday.
Committee Chair Councillor Vicki Buck is confident the move can be achieved.
"I think we can do it, and I think many residents want to see it happen for the health of our environment," Ms Buck says.
Almost all council events are already completely free of single-use plastic straws.
