A Christchurch mother is being praised for calling police on her son after she found a number of stolen items in her home.

The mother dobbed her 14-year-old son in after he refused to tell her where the items came from.

Senior Constable Bruce Ward told NZME when police arrived at the woman's home they found a bike, scooter and shoes which are believed to have been stolen from properties in the suburbs of Wigram and Hornby.

Between eight and ten teenagers are believed to be involved in the crime spree.

"They'd go from house to house and have a look at what had been left out during the night on the doorsteps, and they'd taken what they wanted. Police believe they probably stole some of these items," Senior Constable Ward told NZME.

The 14-year-old will now be charged with burglary.

Police have a number of items they believe were stolen but they need the owners to come forward before they can lay more charges, Senior Constable Ward says.

Police are urging residents to call police and report any missing items from their homes.

Parents whose teenagers return home with items that don't belong to them are also urged to call police.
