Combination of king tide and strong winds to bring power outages, flooding on Tuesday

The upper North Island is in for a wild Tuesday as a combination of a king tide and strong wind gusts hit New Zealand.

NIWA weather forecaster Chris Brandolino told The AM Show there is potential for weather-related problems in western coastal areas of the North Island.

"It looks like the strongest winds will miss Auckland proper, it is going to get windy and there will be wind and rain today, but the greatest wind gusts are likely to be western areas," he said.

"Particularly say from Raglan, maybe up to about Piha and that kind of area, coastal, west coastal areas and there's going to be some damaging wind gusts, things like that will likely be there."

The winds come at the same time as a potentially dangerous king tide, meaning that power disruption and flooding is on the cards.

"There could be some power outages in coastal western areas, higher up especially as I say from Piha southbound the strongest winds will likely be," he said.

"We have a high tide this morning in the Auckland area around 9:30 and another this evening around ten and we've got big waves. These strong winds coinciding with a king tide [means] there is a risk of some coastal flooding."

Mr Brandolino said people should be aware if their property is at risk of flooding as it could happen when the bad weather hits.

"If your area tends to get a bit nastier flooding during the king tides you're going to want to be on higher alert," he said.

"With the big waves, the wind coming on shortly, the king tide that puts you at greatest risk."
