Cow and calf sent to slaughter after Auckland attack

A cow and her calf have been sent to a slaughterhouse after two people were injured in a cow attack in Auckland on Sunday.

Aimee Wedgwood was running loops through Totara Park when she noticed a group of cows acting suspiciously. As she was backing away, two of them launched an attack on her, knocking her off her feet.

A bystander intervened to help, using a stick - but he was knocked down by four cows and left with moderate injuries, including large lacerations to his legs.

Farm manager Peter Linton told Newshub the cows will be killed, and said it was "their time to go anyway".

The mother was a two-year-old, while the male steer was eight months of age and will now be made into veal.

Auckland Council head of parks services Mark Bowater said he's reached out to the man involved in an effort to get more details about Sunday's attack.

"We wish them both well and hope they recover from their injuries quickly," he said.

He said Auckland Council staff visited Totara Park on Monday morning and provided assistance to the site's lessee who manages the stock.

During calving season, cows are typically very protective of their calves and do not like people to get near them, Mr Bowater said, asking locals to be extra careful in parks during this time.

"We recommend anyone that chooses to go in parts of our parks with cows is extra careful during calving season, as it is a cow's natural instinct to protect their calves," he explained.

"Over this time, people should keep their distance from cows, and ensure they never come between them and their calves."
