Staff at a cycle shop in Lower Hutt have put the brakes on a would-be robber's heist.

The 29-year-old man entered the Queens Dr store at 12:50pm on Friday and demanded staff open the till. One told him no, and another asked him to leave.

The suspect threw a punch, but was set upon by the rest of the staff, who managed to restrain him.

A passing police car was flagged down, and the man taken into custody.

He's been charged with demanding with menace and aggravated assault, and will appear in court on Saturday.
