Police are investigating after an elderly man was assaulted in his Greymouth home.
The man answered a knock on his door and was assaulted by an unknown man at around 8.15pm on Sunday.
The intruder entered the house with at least one associate and took several items before leaving.
The incident was a "cowardly attack" on a vulnerable member of the community, Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Kirsten Norton said.
The man was the only person home at the time and suffered some injuries but was not hospitalised.
A scene examination is being conducted.
Police would like to hear from anyone who may have seen anything in the Marsden Road block of Shakespeare Street to Palmerston Street on Sunday night or anyone who may have noted suspicious activity around their homes.
