An elderly man has been assaulted in his own home on Bamford St, Christchurch.
The attack took place at around 7pm on Sunday when the man heard a noise and entered the back door of his house.
A masked offender dressed in dark clothes attacked the 70-year-old, repeatedly hitting him in the head with a sharp object. The assailant then fled.
The victim was treated in Christchurch Hospital but has since been discharged.
