Two people have managed to walk away from a plane crash near Ōhakea Air Base, near Palmerston North.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) spokesperson said five appliances plus a command unit were dispatched.

A fire service spokeswoman says a Harvard aircraft belly landed in the paddock next to the airbase.

The North American Harvard aircraft is a Second World War aircraft maintained and flown by the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) for ceremonial and display purposes.

The fire spokeswoman said police and the Ōhakea air base crew are now handling the situation.

The plane was forced to land after suffering engine issues, RNZAF said in a statement on Monday.

The two people inside the aircraft have not been injured.
