A former employee of the organisation that looks after the Waitangi Treaty Grounds has been charged with defrauding the trust of $1.2 million.

The Serious Fraud Office says Wallace Tamamotu Te Ahuru faces two charges of obtaining by deception and seven of using forged documents.

The 30-year-old worked as the Corporate Services Manager for the Waitangi National Trust Group and was responsible for the trust's finances. He was employed by the trust from September 2012 to June 2016.

Te Ahuru appeared in the Manukau District Court on Tuesday and did not enter a plea, according to the Serious Fraud Office. He was remanded on bail and will reappear in court on September 4.

The Waitangi National Trust manages a 506-hectare estate including the historic Waitangi Treaty Grounds.
